How to add privacy and legal pages to your website
Enable the feature, generate or write the three documents, publish them, then link the hosted pages from your footer
You added a contact form. Emails land in the dashboard. The footer still has no privacy link.
A brochure can look finished without one. The gap shows up when someone asks what you do with their email.
If you are still deciding whether you need the page, start with Do you need a privacy policy on a small website?.
Sitebase’s Privacy & legal pages hosts the three documents. You generate a draft, edit the markdown, then publish. Each published document gets a URL you can put in the footer.
Sitebase is in private beta. Public signup isn’t open. These steps are for accounts with access.
Enable Privacy & legal pages
Add your website in Sitebase. On the Features to start with step, select Privacy & legal pages. If the site already exists, use + Add more, then Enable.
A site has one Privacy & legal pages feature. Open it. Privacy policy is the default tab. The others are Terms of service, Cookie policy, Setup, and Docs.
Generate a draft
Click Generate with AI…. The answers are saved and reused by all three documents.
Fill in the operator details. For flaviocopes.com that looks like this:
- Company / operator name: Flavio Copes
- Contact email: privacy@flaviocopes.com
- Country of establishment: Italy
- DPO / EU representative (optional): leave blank unless you have one
Then check What does this site use?
- Visitor analytics
- Newsletter / email marketing
- Contact forms
- Payments / e-commerce
- User accounts
- Advertising / remarketing
- Social media embeds
- Video embeds (YouTube/Vimeo)
Sitebase pre-checks Visitor analytics. It checks Contact forms if you already have a contact form or waiting list. It checks Newsletter / email marketing if you have a newsletter. Uncheck anything the live site does not use.
Click Generate draft. The notice is “Draft generated. Review it below, edit freely, then publish.”
You generate each document on its own tab. Switch to Terms of service, then Cookie policy, and generate those too. The fields stay filled.
You can skip the generator and type in Document (Markdown) yourself. Raw HTML shows as text.
The draft is a baseline, not legal advice. Match it to the forms and tools you run.
Edit and publish
Change the markdown. Click Save draft. The document stays a draft. Visitors cannot see it.
Click Publish. The Put it on your site card appears. The hosted URL is live.
On a published document the save button reads Save & update live page. That writes the new text to the public page right away. Unpublish swaps the page for a placeholder and keeps your draft.
An empty document cannot publish. Write or generate first.
Link it from the footer
Copy the hosted URL from Put it on your site, or from the table on Setup. The usual place is a footer link.
<footer>
<nav aria-label="Legal">
<a href="https://sitebase.dev/embed/YOUR_LEGAL_KEY?variant=privacy">Privacy policy</a>
<a href="https://sitebase.dev/embed/YOUR_LEGAL_KEY?variant=terms">Terms of service</a>
<a href="https://sitebase.dev/embed/YOUR_LEGAL_KEY?variant=cookie_policy">Cookie policy</a>
</nav>
</footer>
Replace YOUR_LEGAL_KEY with the key from the dashboard. The same URL works in a Notion embed block. It also works on Wix or Squarespace when the editor strips scripts.
Without ?variant=, the URL lists every published document.
If you want the text inside your own layout, use the snippet:
<script
async
crossorigin="anonymous"
src="https://sitebase.dev/embed.js"
data-sitebase-widget="YOUR_LEGAL_KEY"
data-sitebase-variant="privacy"
></script>
Leave the variant off for the index. In an Astro page, add is:inline so the script stays intact.
Unpublished documents show “This document has not been published yet.” They never show the draft.
Point the cookie banner at the cookie policy
If you also have a cookie banner, open its Config. Set Cookie policy link to the hosted cookie policy URL.
https://sitebase.dev/embed/YOUR_LEGAL_KEY?variant=cookie_policy
The banner suggests that URL when the field is empty. Keep Policy link label as Cookie policy, or change the wording.
If the site has no banner yet, the Cookie policy tab tells you to add one from the sidebar so the two stay in sync. When a banner exists, the form lists its categories, starting with necessary.
Read it on the live URL
Open the published site in a fresh window. Click the footer link.
Confirm the text matches your stack and that privacy@flaviocopes.com is an address you read.
Setup lists each document and its hosted page. Docs has the snippet attributes.
For the “do I need this” question, see the privacy policy decision. For the rest of the feature, see Privacy & legal pages.
